The Difference Between Open & Closed Foam Insulation
Spray polyurethane foam (SPF) is generally categorized as either open or closed. The distinction is based on the density of the spray foam, and the degree to which it serves as an air barrier and moisture vapor barrier. Open-cell spray foam, also known as low-density foam, is typically used for attic insulation. It is able to catch roof leaks and will alert you when it’s time to have your roof inspected.
Closed-cell foam, on the other hand, is better suited for crawl spaces and basements, as it acts as both an air and water vapor barrier. Closed-cell foam also boasts a higher R-value than open-cell foam.
